One wonders whether this stuff ever saw a military application too....8-)) Though I have seen it being described more as deadly than as sickening.... 'Deadly, if you are lucky just sick as a dog', sounds better....otherwise some fool *will* try it anyway.... I've never heard of anyone dying from inhaling the vapors... I think=20 you'd be sick enough to know something was wrong long before you died. =20 You body will process it and get rid of it. Small doses will never=20 hurt you. Bigger doses make you sick, but you get over it. Other=20 stuff is far more deadly welding-wise. The chromium in stainless steel=20 and cadmium platings will kill you eventually - they stay with you. =20 Small doses over many years can eventually kill you, without you ever=20 feeling sick (until the end). Just have decent ventilation. You're just spot welding, so the amount=20 of zinc in the air will be minimal. A small fan moving the smoke away=20 from you and out the door will be sufficient. You'll know when you're=20 getting too much zinc... you can *taste* it. You'll see it floating in=20 the air, too. It's kind of like solidified smoke. Very strange. =20 You'll see it if the zinc plate is heavy enough. > is it something that i really should be concerned about if it is just > for a short period at a time? No, not really. Keep your face out of the plume. I got sick from=20 welding galvanized all day inside a silo with almost zero ventilation. =20 Mike Graham | Metalworker, rustic, part-time zealot. mike@metalmangler.com |=20 | Caledon, Ontario, Canada
