Great information. More to add to the crossreference section of teh database. Any information on prices? (and the other two came with either vehicle or alu-filter housing, so no clue about those (separately) either) Maybe some other European members with access to Fram or Mahle database/pricelist can tell use more. However, I believe the airfilter is Volvo-car compatible as well, so even in the USA there should be some aftermarket options, not? (164/B30, perhaps even B18/20 in other Volvo's?) PS airfilter: how common is it for the metal/wire clamp on the rear/right side to be missing? Due to space constraints probably a nasty bugger to put back in place, if it ever pops out of it's socket, and perhaps even a nasty bugger to open up in the first place (so no ergonomic harm in having that one missing), but I do wonder if it is safe to have the filterbox (black/plastic) closed by only 3 clamps. Willem (who thinks 'safe' is a rather subjective term, when even firebrigades used styrofoam panels for roof insulation, hot wires running through them notwithstanding....;)) Jan -- Bye, Willem-Jan Markerink The desire to understand is sometimes far less intelligent than the inability to understand [note: 'a-one' & 'en-el'!] To: Volvo303@yahoogroups.com From: Will Mayberry Date: Wed, 22 Feb 2006 15:53:40 -0800 Subject: Re: [Volvo303] Aftermarket airfilter alternatives Reply-To: Volvo303@yahoogroups.com Willem-Jan Markerink wrote: > Apart from the stock Volvo airfilter (which is also included with the > later aluminium unit), I now have 2 alternative brands with part > number: > > 1) "Mahle (Knecht) LX285" (was present in my C306 firefighter, not > sure why they changed to aftermarket (Mahle is an Austrian brand btw) > > 2) "Fram Airfilter CA3373" (that is what my local Volvo/VW mechanic > came up with, from a generic parts store) > > > Hope this helps some finding a local replacement....info about other > alternatives are still welcome of course. > Williem, Please be sure and put them in the parts database on the Yahoo group. I'd be quite surprised if both old/plastic and new/alu housing have a different size. Note that the Mahle/Knecht filter came from my old/plastic housing, while a Volvo filter was already present in the new/alu housing that I bought myself. (didn't think it was necessary to write down the Volvo spec's, assuming the size/type was identical) The Fram was bought initially as a replacement for the old/plastic unit (my mechanic was so distressed by seeing the location/routing of the air intake (and withnessing a TGB1111 nearly drowning because of it, and/or clogging up the airfilter), that he thought 2 filters was better than one....:)) (but alas, it is the old/plastic housing that is dangerous in backfire situations, so that one must stay empty) Btw, any comment on those metal clamps on the old/plastic housing, in particular the rear one on the right/lower side? Mine is gone, just curious how common that is, intentionally or by accident/clumsiness....;)) -- Bye, Willem-Jan Markerink The desire to understand is sometimes far less intelligent than the inability to understand [note: 'a-one' & 'en-el'!] To: Volvo303@yahoogroups.com From: "Willem-Jan Markerink" Date: Fri, 24 Feb 2006 21:55:29 +0100 Subject: Re: [Volvo303] Aftermarket airfilter alternatives Reply-To: Volvo303@yahoogroups.com On 24 Feb 2006 at 18:01, Willem-Jan Markerink wrote: > On 24 Feb 2006 at 10:18, Dirk Kaiser wrote: > > > > > Volvo303@yahoogroups.com schrieb am 23.02.06 00:54:20: > > > > > > Hi to all, > > > > as KNECHT is very common in germany i'm using this airfilter too. > > > > But it is the part number KNECHT LX218 that fits the aluminium unit. > > > > Are you using the LX285 for the old plastic unit or for the alminium? > > > > Can anyone help? > > I'd be quite surprised if both old/plastic and new/alu housing have a > different size. > > Note that the Mahle/Knecht filter came from my old/plastic housing, > while a Volvo filter was already present in the new/alu housing that > I bought myself. > (didn't think it was necessary to write down the Volvo spec's, > assuming the size/type was identical) > The Fram was bought initially as a replacement for the old/plastic > unit (my mechanic was so distressed by seeing the location/routing of > the air intake (and withnessing a TGB1111 nearly drowning because of > it, and/or clogging up the airfilter), that he thought 2 filters was > better than one....:)) > (but alas, it is the old/plastic housing that is dangerous in > backfire situations, so that one must stay empty) Further note: the alu-housing kit comes with a black rubber seal, that replaces the red rubber seal that is part of the original air- filter element. Because my mechanic left the original filter inside the old/plastic housing, he didn't use the black rubber seal, but when investigating the matter elsewhere, I was told that even when that black rubber seal might have gone lost in the process, I could simply rip the red rubber seal of an air-filter element, and use that instead.... And that rubber might be flexible, but I don't think it would work very well if at the least the rectangular shape wasn't identical in the first place....and certainly the profile/thickness of the rubber. (not necessarily the height of the air-filter element of course, but that too didn't *look* different either) (sorry, too lazy to go outside and measure/compare it; when I am wrong, I am sure someone will correct me....;)) -- Bye, Willem-Jan Markerink The desire to understand is sometimes far less intelligent than the inability to understand [note: 'a-one' & 'en-el'!] To: Volvo303@yahoogroups.com From: Dirk Kaiser Date: Sun, 26 Feb 2006 02:00:47 +0100 Subject: Re: [Volvo303] Aftermarket airfilter alternatives Reply-To: Volvo303@yahoogroups.com Volvo303@yahoogroups.com schrieb am 24.02.06 18:02:20: > Btw, any comment on those metal clamps on the old/plastic housing, in > particular the rear one on the right/lower side? > Mine is gone, just curious how common that is, intentionally or by > accident/clumsiness....;)) Hi Willem, I think intentionally gone (mine is missing too), because its harder to handle it in the c30x than in the 164 and so they set up the new housing... guess they wouldn't have done it if its easy to handle and just a technical problem... dirk To: Volvo303@yahoogroups.com From: "Willem-Jan Markerink" Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2006 00:17:52 +0100 Subject: Re: [Volvo303] Aftermarket airfilter alternatives Reply-To: Volvo303@yahoogroups.com On 22 Feb 2006 at 15:53, Will Mayberry wrote: > Willem-Jan Markerink wrote: > > > Apart from the stock Volvo airfilter (which is also included with the > > later aluminium unit), I now have 2 alternative brands with part > > number: > > > > 1) "Mahle (Knecht) LX285" (was present in my C306 firefighter, not > > sure why they changed to aftermarket (Mahle is an Austrian brand btw) > > > > 2) "Fram Airfilter CA3373" (that is what my local Volvo/VW mechanic > > came up with, from a generic parts store) > > > > > > Hope this helps some finding a local replacement....info about other > > alternatives are still welcome of course. > > > Williem, > > Please be sure and put them in the parts database on the Yahoo group. > > Thanks!, > > Will Mayberry > 1975 C304 Sorry, I don't keep track of the Yahoo database, if only because I prefer the full story/discussion (in textfiles on my own site), instead of just data....but feel free to use whatever data I post to the list, anywhere.
