Not so with Land-Cruisers, including BJ42. You can winch in with the transfer box in L4 rather neutral, although my original manual doesn't seem to advice to do so for some reason unknown to me. Note that mixing parts from different cruisers can result in the cardan powering the winch 'backwards' in those Cruisers unfortunate enough not to have a winch direction switch. (ie winching in is with gear in R, just HJ61 and LJ70 series I think). Toyota's PTO winches are excellent - strong, fast, reliable. I'd forget about an electric one. The universal problems with PTO winches is that if the motor stops, so does the winch (eg flooding). And, that moving the winch between several brackets is almost impossible. Nevertheless, I guess one could have front and rear winch brackets with some Cruisers, as some have PTO both towards the front and the rear from the transfer box (at least HJ60). See for example Riku's ex-truck on Phil's pages: http://www.netsonic.fi/~bj-45/tlc/ownerpict/rikupaavola/riku.en.html Once upon a time Finland had no tax on cars with winches. That's why practically all the 40's are equipped with one, and even some 60's. And the finnish army, police, frontier guard use HJ's, I think there are even 61's with winches over here. Also 61's w/o the turbo. -- Antti Rauramo 1978 HJ-45LP
