From: Bruce Lawson To: Subject: [LCML] Adjusting steering pump pressure? Reply-To: landcruisers@birfield.com Date: Sat, 05 Jul 2003 15:48:18 -0600 On the several different FJ60's I've driven, I've noticed that they have widely varying power steering assist. I figure it likely has to do with the condition of the steering pump. My current rig has lousy power assist at idle. It seems ok when the engine is revved up so I think the steering system as a whole is Ok - no leaks, plenty of Dexron fluid, etc. Assuming my pump isn't "slipping" badly in the vanes, I'm wondering if the flow control valve is maintaining adequate pressure. Has anyone out there messed with the flow control valve spring? The book gives a free length and limit for the spring. I was going to remove the spring to check the length and possibly stretch it a bit to see if that ups the system pressure. I haven't put a pressure gauge on it yet, (don't have one) but I could if it becomes necessary. One other note in the manual is to check that the flow control valve spool is marked matching the pump body. I assume they match the fit of the spool to the bore in the body during manufacture. Do the rebuilders keep the spools matched up or is the fit lost when the pump enters a remanufacturing operation? The pressure one. Once it is out you can take the relief apart and pull out the shim that is in there. this will give you a few hundred more PSI in the steering system i know it works for the saginaw pump and they all work on the same princple Scott Urquhart, 72 fj40, 74 fj40, 76 fj40, 78 fj40.
