I didn't get any replies either to my query (see ADF Scanners from a couple of days ago). I've been investigating on my own and here are some conclusions I'm drawing off what I've read on the Web and what remains of Dejanews (now Google Beta). 1) ADF attachments to inexpensive flatbed scanners can be problematical, there isn't one that I haven't heard some complaints about. Furthermore they are very slow, around 1-2 ppm. My conclusion is that the technology to reliably handle paper is complex enough to not adapt well to the bargain basement. 2) Mid-Price scanners with the integrated ADF are either love 'm or hate 'em. One that I was looking at for about $500 was the HP 6350 cse- from the reviews I read, it's a matter of luck on the ADF- either it works well or it jams a lot. 3) The Fuji ScanPartner 15C seems to the be lowest cost ($750) solution that will be reliable and fast (15ppm) for lots of text. This is probably the way that I'll go. If anyone out there wants to comment on these conclusions from actual experience, I and 'jj' here would be more than grateful! JB FROM: "Belasarius" SUBJECT: Scanning Double Sided Documents DATE: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 18:04:55 GMT NEWSGROUPS: comp.periphs.scanners Does anyone have any good ideas as to scanning double sided documents. I'm proposing to get a Fuji 15c which is rumored to have a reliable single sided ADF. All well and good, but I'd like to find software that would allow me to run one side of a multipage double sided document through (giving me pages 1,3,5,7....) into one file, then run the second side through (giving me pages 2,4,6,8....), and then merge the files, interleaving the images so I end up with the pages in the correct order for conversion into pdf files. Or any other ideas that would keep me from manually scanning these documents on my 15ppm scanner with an ADF! It is a 3091DC, it will do both sides of the document at one time. Try this link out, http://www.fcpa.com/product/prd_product_frame.html. We have worked with both the 15C and the 3091DC for document imaging applications. Both work well for low duty cycle operations. THe 15C is a very good scanner, it has proven to be very reliable. The 3091DC has only been out for a little while, but if I had duplex documents, that is the one that I would use. If you are going to convert to PDF, there are applications that will do it for right from the scanner. Autoscan32 will do it, although it is a bit on the pricey side. It is for the higher volume PDF production. You can see the software at www.visionshape.com, in fact you can download a trial. I went to the link you suggested and see that while the 3091 does the duplex scanning, I give up the ability to scan from books and magazines. There is the 3092 which does both, but costs twice as much. Probably 90% of what I'm doing is simplex scanning. Are you aware of any software that can interleave image files? Given that simplex scanner are common, and duplex documents are also not that rare, it seems that this would not have been hard to do (hint to any entrepreneurial programmers who might be reading this!). I suppose another way to cover myself either for bound material OR duplex depending on which scanner I get is to run to the local copy shop and zip out single sided documents which I can then take home and scan. I did notice that while the website indicated that the duty cycle for the 3091 was 500 legal sized per day, they did not mention a duty cycle for the 15C. Do you happen to know what it is? Also, how firm is the duty cycle for 3091- when I hit 500 do I have to shut it down, or could I have a thousand document day? Either Textbridge Pro or OmniPage (v9) will interleave page scans (I can't recall which at the moment and won't have access to the PC they are installed on for a few weeks) They would only give ocr'd .txt / .doc files or similar as i'm not aware of a multipage image file format. Despite this, and assuming the correct page / filename numbering sequence, importing of raw multipage image files into Acrobat is easy.
