FROM: rpm-reorg@nareid.demon.co.uk (Helge Nareid) SUBJECT: Availability of the new rec.photo.marketplace.* groups DATE: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 10:11:56 GMT NEWSGROUPS: rec.photo.marketplace,rec.photo.misc Five new photography marketplace groups were created on the 16th March 1999. By this time they should be available on all major newsservers. If you can't find them, please contact your internet service provider's news administrator or helpdesk. The new groups are: rec.photo.marketplace.35mm rec.photo.marketplace.darkroom rec.photo.marketplace.digital rec.photo.marketplace.large-format rec.photo.marketplace.medium-format The vote to rename rec.photo.marketplace to rec.photo.marketplace.misc did _not_ pass, and the rec.photo.marketplace group continues to exist with its original charter unchanged. Some more information about the creation of the groups can be found at http://www.nareid.demon.co.uk/rpm/index.html There have been numerous complaints because several ISPs have refused or neglected to create the new groups on their news servers. Please understand that there is virtually nothing I can do about this. The groups were created as the result of a properly conducted newsgroup vote as laid down in the guidelines for the creation of "Big 8" newsgroup - it has been customary for such groups to be automatically created on all major newsservers, but recent forgeries of newsgroup control messages have caused a lot of news administrators to err on the side of caution. Unfortunately (or perhaps not), I have no powers to force any ISP into carrying the new groups - that power ultimately resides with _you_, the users, in that you can tell your ISP that you'll take your business elsewhere if they do not provide a satisfactory service. Please be aware that there are so many variations of newsreaders and ISPs out there that it is utterly impossible for me to provide detailed instructions on how to subscribe to the new groups. My best advice is to contact your local news administrator and (politely) ask them to add the new groups and ask for advice on how to access them. You probably know the support e-mail address and/or telephone number for your ISP. It is common to have an e-mail address such as "usenet@" for newsgroup administration, but it is not compulsory (other possible addresses are "news@..." or "newmaster@..."). If your news administrator asks for the control messages, the official control messages for "Big-8" newsgroups are archived at ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/control including the control messages for the rec.photo.marketplace.* groups. There is also an archive for news.announce.newgroups at ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/news.announce.newgroups/ David Lawrence, the "news.announce.newgroups" moderator, also posts offical checkgroup messages regularly in "news.announce.newgroups" and "news.groups", with the subject lines "Checkgroups message (with INET groups) and "Checkgroups message (without INET groups)". Both messages now list the new rec.photo.marketplace.* groups. -- Helge Nareid Proponent of rec.photo.marketplace reorganization
