Peter was one of the formost glamour photographers in the world. He used both Rolleiflexes and Graflex SLR cameras. His camera designes came from a need for the speed of a TLR for large-format work. In the forties and fifties most publishers and advertizing agencies would not accept anything smaller than 4x5 and preferred 5x7 or 8x10, hence the desire for light weight cameras for larger size films. Peter also shot a lot of industrial motion pictures. He, and his wife Alice, wrote a lot of books on glamour photography. His father, BTW, was Gibson Gowland, a quite famous star of the silent picture era. He must be in his eighties now. When I met him I found him to be very friendly, and after an initial reticence he can talk your ear off:-) --- Richard Knoppow Los Angeles, Ca. dickburk@ix.netcom.com FROM: jess4203@aol.com (Jess4203) SUBJECT: Re: Peter Gowland Website DATE: 07 Sep 2000 02:03:07 GMT ORGANIZATION: AOL http://www.aol.com NEWSGROUPS: rec.photo.equipment.large-format >I had no idea Mr. Gowland did anything but make cameras. Wow! That makes me feel really dated! Peter Gowland is THE glamour photographer, but I guess we are talking about another era. The cameras are a good idea, I have a 4x5 Pocket View and wouldn't trade it for anything, it is a great little monorail, and great for backpacking. I talked to Peter back a few years ago about modifications to my camera and he was very accessible and forthcoming about helping out with a replacement bellows. i emailed him recently and he is still in the camera business, but kind of phasing out to devote more time to other things, so there are some bargains to be had among the cameras on hand, I think. What was interesting about Gowland is that he is very much a 'thrifty' photographer with a waste-not attitude (being a child of the Depression), often hacking together his own equipment affordably. (see his ingenue in photographing and selling the plans for his children's playhouse to Better Homes and Garden) His cameras supposedly reflects his philosophy of simplicity and affordability. Over the last 30+ years he's photographed and published some of the most beautiful women in the world, designed and sold some very innovative cameras (how many individuals start, make and sell their cameras?) and now has gone digital.
