I find, or at least I did find when I was doing more off-roading, that it is essential to lock the rear on a steep downgrade. If you rely on engine breaking and lift one of the rear wheels (as if there were a chance of not lifting a rear wheel), the wheel that is on the ground will accelerate forward. If that wheel goes faster and the engine stays at the same speed, the wheel in the air will go slower OR it will actually turn backwards! When that wheel once again touches the ground it will create a very large shock throughout the drivetrain. Not good! With the rear diff locked, the wheel in the air will still be going the same speed as the other when it hits the ground again. In addition, you will maintain control of your speed. In my opinion, this is better than relying on 4wd because there is less chance of lifting both rear wheels. Pat Leonard
