Send reply to: dtlc@helios.net Hi Folks, With all the recent talk of turbochargers etc. on the list, I thought I'd pass on some info I picked up in a car mag. the other day. It seems that the people at "Garrett" Turbochargers are in the development stages of what's being called a "Hydracharger". From the small photo I saw it basically looks like half a turbo with a small (ie. less than 1/4 the size of the turbo housing) hydraulic pump where the exhaust driven impeller/housing would be. Not many specs. have been released yet but Garrett is claiming 0-100,000 rpm in 1 sec. for a "spool up" time (ie. virtually no turbo lag) with infinite control of turbo impeller speed at any engine RPM. Of course having to run this thing with hydraulics negates some of the advantages of "free exhaust" being used as in a normal turbo, but in return you get much more flexibility in plumbing/routing and mounting the turbo itself (one editor was already fantasizing about mounting the Hydracharger in a spare battery box in an attempt to hide the unit in his pocket rocket import car engine compartment). Like I said, as far as I know Garrett has not begun selling this unit yet and are still in the testing stages, but for those of you (like myself) who dream of having a turbo someday, this is one more avenue to consider.....
