There's a rectangular oblong switch that moves back and forth just above the on off switch with a bell symbol. Pulling the rectangular switch toward the camera will store the present focus of the lens, and ring the beeper if it's turned on. Then any time you nudge the knurled ring on the lens the lens will return to the selected point of focus (and beep again if remember correctly). You have probably noticed that the lens will not focus manually (FTM) unless the shutter is depressed half way. Well there is a way to engage manual focus without depressing the shutter. Let the lens autofocus on something (you don't have to do this, but it makes sense to do so) and engage focus preset. After nudging the knurled ring you'll find the lens can be focused manually without the shutter being depressed. I think it is intended to work this way, however, I cannot recall whether depressing the shutter wipes out the selected manual focus by restarting AF. Do some dry firing to test this out (and report back). I seem to recall that the manual focus holds for the shot in spite of the camera's not signaling focus lock. Now I have a question - one of the EOS3's custom function (No. 7) relates, I believe, to usage of the function we're discussing. I don't have an EOS3 (yet), but would like to know what CF7 does or does not do. Could some long lensed EOS3 user help us out here?
