(this is the first Cruiser I've ever owned) It goes well, looks like it has been looked after by the previous owners, but it seems to blow a fair amount of blueish smoke. The injectors and fuel pump have been recently done (proven by receipts). What could be the problem and how can I check and diagnose it? Also, the oil gauge needle sits down in the lower quarter of the gauge calibrations-is this normal? Brakes... The front brakes were locking well before the rear. I have adjusted the load/brake pressure regulating valve on the diff housing out to the max. This hasn't sorted the problem out any. Any ideas about that? Turbo timer... Would it be advisable to install a turbo timer onto this machine? 15'' rims... Are they standard? What sort of pressure should I be running in Yokohama's around town? Workshop manual and owner's handbook... Anyone got one of each of these for sale? Oil type... What is a good brand of synthetic oil to run through the motor? Any help would be appreciated as I am as green as a cabbage about a lot of things on these fine beasts. Bryan, GC might shed more light here, but I believe some of the problem could be the different composition of Japanese fuel. I understand they use a good percentage of methanol (or something similar) to help control emissions, and the pump is set up accordingly. This sees Japanese imports blow copious amounts of smoke on our Oz fuel. I assume Kiwi fuel is similar? Was your pump re-calibrated by a recognised Denso agent? Denso is very secretive about their settings. A pump done by others can be a hit and miss affair. Mate, I'd give it a compression check to make sure all is okay in there. Also being a Japanese import, Norm was right about the different specs on the pump. Many Japanese import diesels tend to have clogged up exhausts. They spend a lot of time idling and not really getting up to temperature. You may be seeing a combination of soot and retarded injector pump timing (or the injector crack off pressures are set a tad high - which results in retarded timing). In any case it may pay to have a few recognised diesel shops have a look at it. You can usually tell by colour, EGT, smell, how the smoke hangs in the air (or dissipates) etc. Cheers gc '97 HDJ80 - Melbourne Oz From: TJLeeder To: "'80_series@sgiblab.sgi.com'" <80_series@sgiblab.sgi.com> Subject: RE: [80] Smokin' Joe VX 1HD-T... The injectors and fuel pump have been recently done (proven by receipts). What could be the problem and how can I check and diagnose it? Also, the oil gauge needle sits down in the lower quarter of the gauge calibrations-is this normal? Sounds like worn oil rings and perhaps worn valve stem seals. Compression test, cylinder leakage test etc. Oil pressure test using a good test gauge. all these test will prove where your problems are. without them we can tell you no more. the other problem that they have is that they breath a little oil from the rocker cover and swallow it. take the pipe from the rocker cover off [block off the hole in the inlet] and run it into a collector bottle for a week and see what happens. Brakes... The front brakes were locking well before the rear. I have adjusted the load/brake pressure regulating valve on the diff housing out to the max. This hasn't sorted the problem out any. Any ideas about that? the early one had little brakes and did have a problem. Perhaps you have a problem with the setting of the rod adjustment. Did you extend the nuts and rod adjustment along, ie upwards on the thread? if so this is correct when you have a suspension lift. Other problems may be: Hard disc pads fitted, restricted hydraulic hose, bent, kinked or damaged metal hydraulic tubing to the rear, Failed master cylinder rubbers to the rear. how high is your brake pedal? Turbo timer... Would it be advisable to install a turbo timer onto this machine? Depends on your driving. IE: in the glovebox guide it states to run the motor at idle for 1 ~ 2 minutes only after expressway driving ie greater than 80 kph. You do not require idle down after driving around local roads. having said that I have a ARB Turbo timer fitted. I also push the red STOP button when keying off after stopping when driving in city traffic. 15'' rims... Are they standard? What sort of pressure should I be running in Yokohama's around town? 15 inch is standard on your model. I have Yoko's [16inch] and run 32 Psi empty around town. Workshop manual and owner's handbook... Anyone got one of each of these for sale? See your friendly Toyota dealer if you intend to keep the truck for a while and you intend to do your own servicing etc. It's definitely worth buying the books and it's the cheapest part of your purchase when owning a 80s. Oil type... What is a good brand of synthetic oil to run through the motor? DO NOT run synthetics in your motor!! you have a reasonably old motor that has some wear. If you were to change to synthetics now I reckon you will start to blow smoke like the Smoke screen from a destroyer. I would put a good quality Dino oil in as this is probably what it has been running. Any help would be appreciated as I am as green as a cabbage about a lot of things on these fine beasts. You have a definite advantage over most people already, you belong to this list. Keep asking and someone will tell all that you require. I think they all smoke a little - mine certainly does. They also seem to suck small amounts of oil through the crankcase breather hose, which runs from the rocker cover to the air cleaner which can make the smoke a blue colour. > Also, the oil gauge needle sits down in the lower quarter of the gauge > calibrations-is this normal? Low oil pressure can indicate wear. A well noted problem with these engines is big-end bearing failures. Check the history to make sure they have been replaced. Failure of these means big dollars. Please check out this link for more info: http://reality.sgi.com/80_series/tech/td_bearings.html My gauge never runs higher than half. Checks with service gauges show all is fine. Could just be a gauge or sender calibration problem. > Brakes... > The front brakes were locking well before the rear. I have adjusted the > load/brake pressure regulating valve on the diff housing out to the max. > This hasn't sorted the problem out any. Any ideas about that? The rear brakes are not up to the job at hand on these. It is for this reason Toyota fitted larger rear brakes starting late 1992. My front brakes lock well before the rear, if the rear lock at all with the weight I carry. > Turbo timer... > Would it be advisable to install a turbo timer onto this machine? They don't really need it, particularly with the watercooled turbo. It is more of a convenience item if you can't wait a minute before shutting down. If you have a manual model, make sure your handbrake is in good working (is there such thing??) order before you set the timer! > 15'' rims... > Are they standard? What sort of pressure should I be running in Yokohama's > around town? 15" rims were standard until late '92 when they had to fit bigger wheels (16") to clear the new larger rear brakes. > Workshop manual and owner's handbook... > Anyone got one of each of these for sale? This is certainly a possibility with the 1HD-T. The fix is easy with removal of the rocker cover and bending the breather tabs so as to close the gap. It still breathes but does a better job of keeping the oil where it's needed. Damn it we did one last week but I was too slow in getting the camera out. Next time. Cheers gc '97 HDJ80 - Melbourne Oz
