Rotary pumps are only lubricated by the fuel, and long before your engine starts to miss you are running on a foamy fuel/air mixture that has no lubricating properties at all. Even on inline pumps like the 3B the plungers run clearances measured in millionths of an inch, anytime there is air there is metal to metal contact. Whan the tank level is very low you can get little shots of air every time you go around the corner. Think of an injection pump without fuel as an engine with no oil, the wear occurs very quickly.
