sad news. Simon's daughter called the office this week and told
us Simon is really bad off and wanted to get the news to as many of his

I'll miss that guy, with his neverending recalcitrant 'stirring the
pot' character, never too tired to step on some toes, even at his old
age, and despite his growing handicaps....while digging a bit, I
found this lovely note that says it all:

http://www.pauck.de/archive/mailinglist/panorama/mhonarc/msg06127.html

Goodbye dear friend.
With you dies part of an era of panorama photography.
A shame we never met, and 'only' exchanged nearly a hundred emails,
mostly fun & educational, some serious, even finding a long-lost
buddy of you in Holland along the way, Bart Mulder[*], another
scholar/college/friend of famous Dutch panorama photograher Frits
Rotgans.
Thank you for spending your precious time on the Panorama
Mailinglist, and teaching the young ones.
I for sure will never forget you, it was a pleasure and an honor to
have met you.

May your end be peaceful & quiet.

Goodbye dear friend.

CC to PhotoForum/EOS/IR, possibly some old nestors & friends of him
around there too.

[*] many moons ago, I found a Hulcherama in a Dutch second hand
shop....curious about it's low serial number, I wrote things down,
and talked to Simon about it, knowing he was the spiritual father of
the Hulcherama back then....the next day, after checking with the
factory, he replied that the camera once belonged to his old but long-
lost friend Bart Mulder, and all this renewed the search for Bart
(which we did find in the end, together with the help of Monica
Rotgans, daugher of).
(sadly I can now not find any valid current email-address of either,
to notify them about Simon's fate)

With the recent passing of both Richard "Dick" Fowler and Edward Segal, and now
the news of Simon Nathan's poor condition, is now not the time to find some
method for preserving the knowledge and experience that these men (and many
others) had?

While there have been many books published in recent years by contemporary
photographers (which I think is terrific), there has yet to be a book (or other
publication) truly devoted to the history of panoramic photography and the
people behind the images.

When I was the editor of IAPP's magazine I tried to include as much history as
possible, but even this wasn't enough. Besides, photographer profiles were most
often about the organization's members whereas people like Simon Nathan and
Jerry Dantzic never joined.

I would be willing to work with others out there to acquire, organize, preserve
and make available information on the history of panoramic photography (and
imaging) and the prople that made it all possible. If this is of interest to
you, please contact me directly at richard.schneider@nara.gov or you can call me
during business hours (in Maryland, USA) at 301-837-3617.

Thanks,
Richard

Hello Group,
I recently bought a stack of US Camera Magazine from the early 60's at an
estate sale. I had written Simon about 2 months ago to let him know that I had
these magazines and if he wanted any copied since he was in every one of them
in his regular column of Simon Says... I never heard back from him, and I
wondered why. Heck, I wrote the address words and numbers really BIG across
the entire envelope just the way he did! It does sadden me to hear of Simons
condition and I wish him well even though the outcome may look grim.
He certainly has been a very sharing person throughout his life. Thank you

Actually, I have a brief blurb at

http://medfmt.8k.com/bronlens.html#simon

on his exploits with Bronica lenses, and so he is pretty well recognized as one of
the originals, well documented in Modern Photography columns he wrote over many
years ;-)

I will try to do an update and add him to the lens hacker listings along with
the other fellow - my understanding is that he has recovered enough to get out
of the hospital, which is good news. On the pan list there was a suggestion that
we need to get somebody to get interviews with Simon and others as these folks
are being lost to us, and their early exploits and stories with them ;-( I am
doing something like this for our campus radio club with a new mini-DV
recorder/camera, so it isn't rocket science ;-)

still catching up to overflowed mail that crashed our servers; I deleted a few
thousand virii and read over a thousand emails today (rainy day, catching up) -
I think the spammers are winning ;-(

Hi George
It is me Nancy Nathan. I am sorry I have not written to the chat room. I see
all the correspondence and am learning allot. As for my Dad he is not well. He
is pretty much bed bound and his memory is in and out. His humor ,Simon style is
in tact , so to speak . Sometimes I show him pictures of himself and he doesn't
know who he is but he can name the camera, lens and if it has an interchangeable
back. The mind is so fascinating. He is at a nursing home near me in Riverdale.
He thinks he is in some kind of room where visitors aren't allowed. They have
been few but from many parts of the country. Betty Giles of Hulcher posted the
news that Simon was sick and if anybody wanted to know to call me. Well I have
received several camera's , lenses and photo's from people everywhere. One man
sent back a camera Simon left there 12 years ago. I also have heard from Anne
Raymond of Dayton fame who used to baby-sit for me. It has been bittersweet. He
is at Schervier Nursing Care center
2975 Independence Ave
Riverdale Ny 1046
My number 1s 917312 6750.

I'm looking for anyone to write to me there most interesting time with Simon or
whatever. Those who didn't like him need not write.. I want to read some of them
at his memorial when the time comes.

Thanx Nancy

Anything you havethat you would be willing to part with I'd be happy to pay for
the shipping . More than that I can't manage. Let me know

they discussed taking the Nikon camera into space.

It's comforting to know that his remarkable spirit even left some
traces in outer space....:))

Goodbye dear friend, it was a privilege knowing you all these years,
if only by email, and never in person sadly.

Hi Harley,

While Simon & I exchanged long emails frequently over the last half
decade, we never met in person, so if 'good things' & 'dropped in'
were connected to the same occasion/person (and/or more than half a
decade ago), it more likely was wide-angle/panorama guru Mr. Rotgans,
one of Simon tutors[*]

And in that context I remember a story from Mr. Rotgans' daughter,
Monica:

xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Simon, uncle Simon to me, was indeed a remarkable, sometimes

[*] I sadly never met Mr. Rotgans either, so no real-world
connections between Simon and me (other than a handful of snailmail
letters/articles), only virtual (but I might meet his old friend (and
fellow RIT classmate) Edward Meyers at the PhotoKina this year).

PS: I am almost tempted to create a small temporarily mailinglist,
'Friends of Simon', to exchange stories over time, whenever someone
remembers something new/untold.
(I believe that Richard Schneider also felt a strong urge to collect
such things, as some kind of chronicle/autobiography, to save things
from oblivion....such a wonderful explorative life, so little written
down & archived)

Simon used to play
tricks on Dutch photographer Frits Rotgans. So one day
Simon and a few friends decided to visit Frits in Amsterdam.
Simon telephoned Frits and asked him to book some rooms in a
Hotel near Frits' home (Sarphatistraat). So now it was Frits'
turn to play tricks. Frits books them all into the Amstel
hotel, the most expensive (at that time in the 1960s) hotel
in Europe (or just about). I never remember seeing Frits smile.
This time I'm sure he did. Ed

Here's another one.
Simon walked into my office at Pop Photo the day his column
was due (I was his editor). I ask, where is your column? He
answers, I started it, he replied. How much is done? I ask.
He says, "first word....The"...give me a typewriter...can
I have my check today?"

My telephone rings. I answer it. It's a famous P.R. person
from a big photo company. He says that he just received a
postcard from Simon which has the letters G S I Y H on it.
What does this mean, he asks me, as Simon is rolling in
laughter on the floor. (Go Shit In Your Hat). I answer,
George Santayana Is Your Hero. I saved the day, again. Ed

Frits also smiled when he succeeded in this:
there was a kind of bet that Simon was not ever to be visiting Marken, a
very famous fisherman village in Holland, a real tourist-attraction. So one
they, when Simon visited, we all got into the car and drove around, Simon I
think in the front with Frits. he fell asleep (like always) and my father
drove asap to Marken where he woke him up....................

Thank you, I remember now - - Frits Rotgans

Shortly after I met Simon in '75 he was at my house nodding off on the sofa.
My wife fixed the futon in our extra room and told him it was ready. In true
Simon fashion he said, No, I am fine here, and promptly went to sleep. From
my wife's Japanese point-of-view this was a real affront and he was never
really welcome at our house after that.

Hi all ,

Thank-you so so much for your thoughts, stories ,well wishes. Please send
more if you can, when you think of something.I'd love to put it all together
for myself , my daughter Heather(currently living in China Heather Amborn
hennaymobile@hotmail.com )and anyone who might enjoy a walk down memory lane
with Simon via these anectdotes. I must admit I am learning more about my
dad who frequently was larger than life to me as a child and whose
idiosyncricies often enchanted, charmed and created confusion for me. These
past 2 years have been agift although difficult and exhausting. It seems
only fitting that his obit came out on the holiday whose colors are red ,
whit and blue. For those of you that have ever seen his apt 79th street ,
Simon had red , whit and blue everything.plates, sheets, towels, a pepsi
runner in the hallway ,red , white and blue basketball etc.

I miss him so very much and there is little i can do or see in NY that
doesn't remind me of something or some story that involves my dad.

As for the idea of a ongoing "Friends of Simon" I would love it. I had
started to receive e-mails from people who wrote their most interesting or
favorite or silliest or??? with Simon. I have amassed quite a few.It just
needs to be mildly organized . The benefit is each of you may know people
that Simon knew and on. Six degrees?? I am without many phone numbers or
names of people who were friends of Simon any kind of list or reference
would be grand. Please let me know how to edit the list as some of my co
workers are on it and people who didn't know my dad . Afew thought the mail
was a virus DUH.

YES YES YES How can I help

Love nancy nathan #1 daughter of the late great simon nathan

Simon was not speaking to Nancy and he refused to see
his recently born granddaughter, Heather. So, to make him
see his granddaughter I visited nancy and photographed
her with Heather, then I published the photo in Popular
Photography magazine, where he couldn't help but see it. Ed

FROM: The New York Times ~

Simon Nathan, a photographer and writer whose "Simon Sez"
columns in popular photography magazines kept professionals
and hobbyists up to date with the innovations of camera
makers after World War II, died on May 19 in the Bronx. He
was 82.

A longtime Manhattan resident, he died in a nursing home in
Riverdale, said his daughter, Nancy Nathan. His most recent
residence was in East Orange, N.J.

Mr. Nathan began writing his column in the 1950's, when
Japanese cameras were first making their way to America to
challenge advanced German models. Appearing in Popular
Photography, Modern Photography and other magazines, the
column, which gained a reputation for keen reporting of
technical breakthroughs, was an opinionated guide to new
equipment that also offered tips on how to shoot various
subjects.

Mr. Nathan also produced a number of books for Fawcett
during the 1950's, including "Good Photography's 35mm
Handbook," "Good Photography's Darkroom Guide" and "Camera
in Paris."

He was particularly interested in panoramic photography, a
field that caught his attention while working for the Flying
Tigers freight line. Faced with the challenge of
photographing cargo planes, he worked with camera builders
on a hand-held camera capable of producing undistorted
large-format pictures.

He later applied his panoramic techniques on assignment to
make photographic stills for Hollywood epics like
"Waterloo," and "Khartoum" as well as for nine James Bond
films. A 1989 panoramic photo of the United Nations, taken
from the Fuji blimp, appears on a United Nations postage
stamp.

Simon Morris Nathan was born on July 28, 1921, in Westview,
Pa., and graduated from the University of Dayton.

His marriage to Ida Wyman ended in divorce. Besides his
daughter, Nancy, of Riverdale, he is survived by his son,
David, of Birmingham, Ala.; his sisters, Marjorie Koch and
Patricia Sloan, both of Montgomery, Ala.; his brothers,
Robert of Huntsville, Ala., and David of California; and a
grandchild.

Hi Nancy,

I only know one Bond film for sure - You only live twice - the one filmed in
Japan. One of the last movies he did for Lee ?? was Escape to Victory, the
Stallone WWII soccer film - POWs vs. German guards. It was filmed in Buda,
or Pest, I ain't sure.

This was during the time Simon and I had matching Olympus microcassette
recorders (Simon bought both) and were exchanging tapes. Simon ran out of
batteries and bought a set in Budapest. He barely got one tape recorded
before they died.

I remember him telling me about doing a film in Moscow which I think was a
Bond film. Anybody remember which one?

I just remembered -- Lee Green who is no longer with us, but his wife may
be. They lived in far south California, or actually in Baja California I
think.

Harley
