This was posted in answer to a diff. topic earlier this year Don't know if he's still on the list or not. I would not recommend going to the cheapest grade of oil. My 80 series has now done in excess of 700,000 kms. I have always used the base Mobil Oil and run additives but I only change the oil and filter every 15,000 kilometers. Motor has not needed to be touched in any form other than my routine maintenance. In fact no work has been required on either the motor, gearbox or diffs. I do not pass this as a recommendation but as a statement of my operation. 1994 - GXL - 4500 Petrol - Bull-bar - Winch - Air-compressor and tank - Dual batteries - Main fuel tank 90litre, Sub fuel tank-Long range 270litre. - Rear mounted Dual spare-wheel carriers with Jerry can outriggers - Full H/D tow package with electric brakes. - TJM Hi-Lift Springs - Poly Air rear inserts. - G-Force Stabiliser ABRC (Body Roll Control package) .. We have a Twenty eight foot Van which we use as an on site office and studio when we go out on assignment. Strategically located we use this unit as a base from which we organise excursions to collect information, details and photographs of particular localities. Once we have sufficient material we return to our base in the Whitsundays to compile and submit the relevant articles. So the chosen vehicle needed to be able to reliably provide this towing capacity over large distances. My experience with transport showed me that your average small diesel in passenger vehicles was not up to the job and its service regime and maintenance schedules would provide an uneconomical prospect. Within the localities we spend most of our time - Petrol is cheaper than diesel - the petrol engine package delivers more torque & power than the then available diesel's.
