Just got back this arvo after a fantastic trip. Truck went great except for one small (read - not so small) problem. The injector pump started leaking just out of Carnarvon Gorge. I noticed it when pumping up the front left wheel after a bit of dirt driving. I chatted to a deisel mech in Charleville and we both decided it was ok to drive back to Melb in that condition. I didn't even notice the fuel consumption difference, and I guess it is a drop every 4 or 5 seconds or so. Guess that explains where the small air leak was. Cruiser has now done 231,000. For the record, the pump started leaking at about 228,000. Looks to be leaking from the spring thingy on the outside (left hand side) of the pump about half way down, but hard to tell. Next problem. Where to take it in Melbourne to get the pump looked at and get a seal kit put through it. I guess that means a full calibration should/will be done while it is off. I guess most places will be just removing the pump and sending it somewhere else to get the hard work done and then reinstalling it and setting up timing, etc. I am in Essendon area, so any places with a good name in the western / northern suburbs would be great. Guess I will be up for about $800 - $1500? Thanks again, Warren Gray. I have talked to almost 5 diesel shops now with a varying response. I have come to the conclusion that I'm going to get a complete overhaul and every part inside the pump not to spec replaced. Unfortunately this will cost somewhere around $2000 (hopefully). Apparently there are 3 updates from Toyota/bosch that my pump has most likely not received. These updates will replace most the commonly warn parts. I think it is better to have a complete service and to know that the pump will keep pumping for the next 200~300k. Some shops suggested that I only have the seals replaced and the upgrades are not worth doing, I disagree. If you just do the seals, you will get away for around $700~$1000. Have a look at the Bosch web site, they have a list of the accredited repairers (or the place most mechanics will send the pump to) to get it repaired. http://www.bosch.com.au/sst/Service.asp?ProductWorld=sst3 or http://tinyurl.com/3x5hz Hope this helps. Your pump seals have shrunk and need to be replaced, this is relatively simple but the fact that your pump has done so many km will add up to extra costs, most likely. Take it to a reputable shop, the cost will not be known until it is stripped down and by then you are stuck. INSIST they use bosch viton seals, NOT toyota rubber ones, why rubber seals are still being used is not far from legal processes! Other than that it may also be time to get the injectors tuned too, extra money too. Lots of fun. Hi Warren, To just replace just the seals is a do it yourself job if you are reasonably handy and the seals will probably amount to less than $50. Most of the work will be in pump removal and refitting. This assumes the pump is OK inside, but by 230,000km it is probably due for a proper service and injectors too if they haven't been touched for a while. Cheers, Craig. The diesel system on Toyota's is made by NipponDenso or just Denso, NOT Bosch. (The design of the fuel system is based on Bosch items) To find your nearest authorised service centre, checkout http://www.denso.com.au/fuel_main.htm and select the Sales and Service tab. They will service it with Denso parts which have been LSD tolerant for over 6 years. Matt, Warren may not be suffering from ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel). Given the vintage of his truck, just the LSD that most places sell is enough. ULSD when it is widespead in another 18 months will start another round of leaks. ;-) Ian B 95 HDJ80 near Canberra To: 80scool_aus@yahoogroups.com From: "Matt Pozzi" Date: Thu, 03 Jun 2004 12:15:50 -0000 Subject: [80_aus] Denso NOT Bosch was Re: Diesel Injector Pump leaking 1HDT Reply-To: 80scool_aus@yahoogroups.com --- In 80scool_aus@yahoogroups.com, "Ian B" wrote: > OK, can we get one thing straight?. > > The diesel system on Toyota's is made by NipponDenso or just Denso, > NOT Bosch. Numerous hundreds of dollars afraid. Not that I want to be accused of scaremongering. I refer to Bosch seals as this is what a repair agency here in Brisbane said. Why do I say this, because the pricks from a reputable shop that did it the previous / first time (not the same mob), about two and half years ago used genuine Toyota rubber seals. Anyway I will call the newer shop regarding this seal issue (Bosch / Denso) and report back. This was AFTER it was leaking on LSD. I almost called them up and said this to them but thought better of it. Never! To set the story straight I can tell you that the shop that fitted the new Viton selas stated to me that Bosch are the only mob making viton seals for the 80 series diesel injection pump. Now if that is true, I hope to hell that toyota never ever touches a leaking pump, all they have is rubber seals! Oh what a feeling. Anyway Bosch is the supplier of viton seals for the pump, please so there is no confusion this is a Denso pump with Bosch seals. Matt 98 1HDFT running on last night's dinnerbyproducts and a lift pump for the chunky bits also with a denso pump and Bosch seals (I hope!)
