Context : We have a '95 factory TD, safari intercooler, 167K km on the dial. Event : The timing belt light and the turbo light would flash on together for a milisecond, usually between 1900 and 2050 RPM under acceleration. This seemed to happen more frequently when warm and resuming from a break. It has happened previously - but I thought I was seeing things - it just blinks, so if you see it in your peripheral vision when you look at the dash it has well gone... The car is going well, no undue noises etc. The turbo whistles a bit, but it has always done so. any clues? I will pull the cover off the timing belt tomorrow and have a squiz. I was wondering if it may be a loose tensioner? Thanks in advance, Paul To: 80scool_aus@yahoogroups.com From: All American Imports Date: Sat, 10 Jul 2004 12:18:13 +0200 Subject: RE: [80_aus] Flashing Turbo & Timing Belt lights Reply-To: 80scool_aus@yahoogroups.com On 10 Jul 2004 at 9:36, Paul Roberts wrote: > Hi All - just back from a 1100km trip up to 1770 from Brissie and > whilst away I noticed a strange phenomena which occured on a few > occasions... > > Context : We have a '95 factory TD, safari intercooler, 167K km on > the dial. > > Event : The timing belt light and the turbo light would flash on > together for a milisecond, usually between 1900 and 2050 RPM under > acceleration. I was wondering if it may be a loose tensioner? > > Thanks in advance, Hi Paul, Like Andrew said alternator connectingplug loose and check the following things as well; 1) Tension on the connector wire under acceleration, give it enough slack so the engine is not pulling on it, 2) Check brushholder of generator and if in doubt replace, 3) Check if the belt adjusterparts are not broken or cracked, this happens quite often, 4) At the same time check condition and tightness of the long bottom bolt of the generator, they wear out the bottom eye, 5) on european models we found a couple of times a not so tight / or not tight enough earthwire at the RHS "A" pillar. This is a problem we never realy found one cause but a variation of causes. It can happen once in a month or a whole day long. On mine the entire dash lights up, all warning lights. I have now learned to live with it, since even with measures that did decrease the problem before (alternator-brushes replaced), it never completely disappeared.... Or someone ought to tell me that alternator-brushes wear out within 50k km's....8-)) -- Bye, Willem-Jan Markerink The desire to understand is sometimes far less intelligent than the inability to understand [note: 'a-one' & 'en-el'!] E) Gebruikelijke elektrische problemen zoals draadbreuk etc.
