This is a serious defect. My insurance company is telling me this is wear and tear. I do a bit of four wheel driving but I cant beleive this is a result of wear and tear. Has anyone else had or heard of the same thing happening to them. Dose anyone know the proper procedure for welding cracked chassie's and would a panel beater be qualified or would you be safer with a qualified welder/ biler maker ? Anythoughts as I would be intrested for future reference what is legal and whats not leagal for insurance purposes, Cheers Scott Meredith Limited Access Earthworks Ph 0415 544 644 To: lcool_aus@yahoogroups.com From: "Roman" <80lcool_aus@roman.claranet.com> Date: Wed, 09 Feb 2005 18:32:38 -0000 Subject: [lcool_aus] Re: major crack in chassis Reply-To: lcool_aus@yahoogroups.com --- In lcool_aus@yahoogroups.com, Victor Organero wrote: > Hi everyone, > I have an 80 series, and I have just noticed a major > crack (ready to snap) in the chassis where the > steering box is attached. I am positive it had never been offoraded. Easily welded up and forgotten. It seems just one of those things... Has anyone else > had or heard of the same thing happening to them. > Victor > 80 series > Mel Hi Victor, Sounds a bit scary. I've had a look at my 93 FZJ80 & there's no sign of any cracks. It's a "very busy" piece of chassis around the steering box with the upper spring support bracket just to the rear, a rubber bump stop and another bracket to the front which has a fixed bar to the other side and an axle locating / swing-bar going across to the LH side of the axle housing. It's hard to imagine that the steering box would cause enough stresses to crack it - especially since it's a full box section. It's more likely that suspension-related issues could be involved if cracks are on vertical face or perhaps a roo-bar if on horizontal face. Any chance of more info as to exact position, etc to enable others to have a good look - perhaps even a photo or 2? Is it thru the steering box mounting holes or around a welded-on bracket? Is it all around the box section i.e. all 4 sides of it? I had experience overseas some years ago with a Chev Blazer that was bingled at the front end & the chassis cracked thru the steering box mounting holes when straightened so it was welded up (admittedly in a 3rd world country). But after that, the stresses applied by the steering box persistently broke the welding. Don't remember if there was a plate either or both sides tho. Dave Guy's, I have seen a few early 80's with cracks in the chassis, in particular around the front edges of the spring mounts. Later 80's had an extra reinforcing piece welded from the bottom of the chassis upwards. My 80 had tiny cracks when I got it, and never showed any signs of opening up.... until after a weekend at Portland Dune Buggy Club. ;-) You'll also find cracks around the 4 bolt holes where the steering box mounts. It's more evident when the steering box is removed for repair, etc. Regards, Greg Goulden 2000 HDJ105 Melb. AU. I have booked my cruiser in for an inspection at Carrera Motors in North Melbourne. The guy assures me he can determine whether it has been caused by an accident which I did have several years ago although nothing appeared at the time, or whether it is wear and tear. He also knows of another person who had the same problem. Apparently it is common in Nissans. I will let you all know of the outcome. The crack is along the weld line. Victor Melbourne
