After plugging it, I was airing back up with one of those cig lighter plug in compressors...I know I am working on a CO2 system. Anyway, I come back out a little while later and all is quiet. The compressor is no longer working, either is the cig lighter. Checked the fuse, good, everything else on that circuit works, but the lighter does not. The compressor no longer works either, will not output air. Question - Did I burn up something, wiring to lighter? There was no smell in the dash. Took dash apart, wire looked good, so did the lighter itself. What happened? Please advise and thanks for the input! I would bet the lighter socket is burned out. The connections might be toasted. Check the power to the lighter with a test light. Check the ground too. Then put a big amp remote power outlet in someplace wired up to a constant power source so you don't have to have the accy on. 8*) Todd Ballard 74 Fj-40 95 FZJ-80 factory locked w/ a remote power outlet 97 T-100 FS also w/ extra outlets I'll throw in for no extra charge ;^) From: james_dubose@peoplesoft.com Subject: Re: [80] Cig lighter quit working To: 80_series@sgiblab.sgi.com Date sent: Mon, 15 May 2000 12:35:14 -0400 Send reply to: 80_series@sgiblab.sgi.com I checked the plugs, good and the oulet itself good. You mentioned "fuse", but not sure if you mean compressor side or lighter vehicle side of circuit. You mentioned > "fuse", but not sure if you mean compressor side or lighter vehicle side of > circuit. The compressor runs, but does not put out air...my take is that it was burned out. As for the lighter, nothing works - put a voltmeter on it - no juice. If youse guys looks real close at the socket design (pull it out and tinker with it, its a tricky bloody thing) there is a fuse strip included in the innards. With some skill and cunning pull it apart and replace said smallish chunk of blown apart electrical conduit with something thicker. Works fine now and the correct fuse in the fuses array will actually blow first now rather than the socket innards. cheers Peter RV80 with redesigned cig socket thats gotto be better than ANYONE elses, but now you all know what to do Sounds like fun, repairing a cruiser wiring goof. Your typical portable compressor will pull 14 odd amps, which will not in its self blow the main fuse. It will however cause much heating in other places, like the fusible link (behind lighter), at the fuse holder and in the thin wiring that leads back to the fuses. The best bet for running the sort of appliances is a separate fused circuit from the main or auxiliary battery terminated at sockets on each end of the cruiser. I realise these sorts of mods are a bit of a pain, but in the long term will produce better performance (less voltage drop due to heavier cable), and better reliability, especially if you do away with the cigarette lighter style plugs. For those of you replacing the fusible link in the cigarette lighter, I wouldn't go too much oversize on the replacement copper wire. Remember what it's purpose is . . . to keep your vehicle and you safe from overheating wires and a possible fire! Kelly has a good idea below, but if you don't go that route, stay within reason. Remember what > it's purpose is . . . to keep your vehicle and you safe from overheating wires > and a possible fire! Now that I think about it, I replaced the fusible link in my 4Runner lighter once using a chunk of solder figuring it would melt if it got too hot. No idea what it's capacity was, but it was enough to run my cell phone! (Not an overly impressive test, is it!) That's me. If you pull the lighter socket out of its cosy little housing and look at the back. There will be remnants of a fusible link (Bit difficult to pick if its blown away completely, like mine) just replaced with a piece of thickish wire. No probs since repair/upgrade and I still run the 'lectric kettle and Air-comp from the ciggy socket. Listers Probably not a bad idea to do this, even if you hasn't blown yours yet. Because it's a fiddly bloody thing, and if you get caught out at "whoop-whoop" like David M and I have, it can be a PITA. From memory the fusible link on the socket is rated at 8A while the Fuse in the fuse box is 15A, which is a lot easier to change. (this is also the radio cicuit. Handy, no radio = blown fuse) Stephen Mazza '97 GXL diesel (with super dooper lighter socket) Date sent: Tue, 16 May 2000 21:12:24 +1000 From: Paul Kelly To: 80_series@sgiblab.sgi.com Subject: Re: [80] Cig lighter quit working Send reply to: 80_series@sgiblab.sgi.com I blew a cigarette lighter with my portable compressor last September. Took me ages to work out what had happened. The fuse was OK, I had +ve 12Volts, the the lighter would not work. I pulled the socket out and put it across the Ohm meter---nothing. grabbed a magnifying glass and then discovered the damn thing had a fuseable link across the back. I took the bushman fix to it, with a little bit of copper wire I closed the circuit. After all there is already a fuse in the circuit. -- Paul Kelly Melbourne Australia pkelly@dezzanet.net.au pkelly52@hotmail.com Paul.Kelly@colesmyer.com.au Ph(03)97411953, Mobs 0407811990, 0408121548 Member Jackeroo 4WD Club(Inc Vic) 93GXL 1FZFE(4500), 5Spd Man, OME(850/860), Cybie, Safari, Kmar, LPG1, Uniden, Garmin, Micropulse, BFG AT TA/KO's From: Kendall700@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 15 May 2000 20:14:44 EDT Subject: Re: [80] Cig lighter quit working (CHAT) To: 80_series@sgiblab.sgi.com Send reply to: 80_series@sgiblab.sgi.com In a message dated 5/15/00 5:45:30 PM Mountain Daylight Time, Stephen.Mazza@hi.riotinto.com.au writes: > Yep. I just have not repaired it yet :) Kendall 1997 FZJ-80 Evergreen, Colorado
