Been catching up on the posts and looking at the pictures so thanks for those. Now that I'm back behind a desk for a bit I just wondered if some of you could assist... Diff locks. I have on my car a dash mounted switch for ACT (haven't really been able to see how well it works yet) and a dash mounted push button for the centre diff. The centre diff also comes on automatically in low range. I also have the push/rotary switch for the front and rear lockers. This is all stuff everyone knows but my question is as follows. I have yet to use the diff locks in anger (had the car less than a month) but I have tested them out. Am I right to engage the centre lock in N or P when stationary? It doesn't always come on straight away so maybe it is sticking. No such problem when engaging low range as centre locks with a vengeance. Also the rear and front lockers flash away and then engage after moving for a bit. Just wondered if someone could me chapter and verse on lockers on/lockers off and how the 80's system works. (I'm fine about when to use them as have experience with other 4x4s but just wanted to know more about TLCs foibles. Also in low ration, does the auto box still go through 1,2,D or is it just a single low range speed? That's what mine feels like at the moment... Sorry Julian, long and maybe excessive. The centre diff also comes on automatically in low range. OK, that is as expected. If you want there is a Pin 7 mod that you can do so that the Centre diff only comes on when the button is pressed, over riding the auto on in low range. > Am I right to engage the centre lock in N or P when stationary?=20 You should be able to engage it any time whilst driving, you shouldn't need to have to go into neutral or Park. > It > doesn't always come on straight away so maybe it is sticking. As far as I recall most diff locks only come on when the diff gears are correctly aligned, this might occur immediately or can take a while. > No such > problem when engaging low range as centre locks with a vengeance. No, in Low range you still have the same gears, but the box appears to hold onto the gears a lot longer so you end up really revving it. The trick is to rev a bit and then back off to encourage the box to change up. -- Regards, Julian Voelcker Mobile: 07971 540362 Cirencester, United Kingdom 1994 HDJ80, 2.5" OME Lift, ARB Date: Tue, 7 Dec 2004 16:52:55 +0000 From: jljones@dircon.co.uk To: elco@landcruisers.info Subject: Re: [ELCO] Sunday Reply-To: elco@landcruisers.info Julian Very helpful, thanks very much... Take a look at: http://www.sleeoffroad.com/technical/tz_cdl_pin7mod.htm The only difference being that the unit is on the right hand side of=20 the drivers footwell behind a big silver coloured ECU - you will need=20 to remove this ECU (four screws) to get at the Transmission Relay=20 behind it. -- Regards, Julian Voelcker Mobile: 07971 540362 Cirencester, United Kingdom 1994 HDJ80, 2.5" OME Lift, ARB xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx center diff lock Pin 7 mod Dan Busey and Spencer Bybee PIN7 Modification Instructions All Praise and Hail to CRUISERDAN Remove the dead pedal and the left front sill plate. In the left kick panel you will find a Silver metal box. That is the ABS ECU. Remove it, and behind you will find a black plastic relay about the size of a cigarette pack. It says "transmission control relay" on it. That's what you are after. The EWD calls it the "center diff lock relay", same thing. Unplug the harness from it and take a terminal pick and remove the black wire with blue tracer from pin#7. Insulate the bare terminal to suit and then put everything else back where you found it. If you have the low 4 position switch at the transfer case unplugged, crawl under there and reconnect that as well. What you have just accomplished is you have interrupted the signal from the transfer case that tells the lock ECU that you went to low range but you are still sending a signal to the transmission ECU telling it that you ARE in low range. Therefore the transmission will shift in the correct low range pattern. In addition you now have true manual control over center diff locking. It only locks when you tell it to without regard to transfer range selection.
