I thought I would share so information regarding replacements - and save some for me!!! I have measured the window channel felt, and purchased / returned almost all of JC Whitney's felts, until I found one that equals / exceeds the OEM felt. I have completely replaced my 71 '55 window channel felt with a JC Whitney felt that is almost identical to the OEM felt. (also replaced window gaskets & weather-stripping - OEM parts). In my opinion this replacement felt is a little tighter on the window, making a much better seal against the elements, and makes a tremendous difference. ====> JC Whitney part #: 18FV4879T 1/2 x 14/32 x 3/16-7/32 8 Feet $5.79 <===== It fits my 71 '55 with the wing windows. I reviewed the OEM replacement felts for the (early version unavailable) 75 & later '55s at SOR, and the JC Whitney product looks very close to those also. Brief installation instructions: There are a couple of tricks to installing the felt with the window in place. 1. You have to remove the door panel(handle, arm rest, crank), so you can access the bottom of the channels. 2. Remove all the old felt, clean the channels, paint to provide rust protection. 3. Spray the new felt with silicone where the window rides. 4. With the window down, install the felt into the channel, and push the felt down between the window and the channel, until you can't get anymore without the felt buckling. 5. Once you have the felt pushed down into the door channel, roll the window up slowly & installing the felt as the window comes up. 6. Roll the window up enough so you can grab the felt from the bottom of the door - small/medium access hole. 7. Grab the felt with pliers, and spray some more silicone into the felt from the top. 8. Gentle pull the felt down to the bottom of the door / window channel. 9. install top window channel runner next. 10. finish the remaining side!!. General Notes: This worked easy for me. Window felt can be installed in one continious piece. Remember silicone is very helpful, don't spray to much silicone to create puddles as this is very slippery stuff!. Try not to pull to hard with the pliers so you don't rip the felt. Get a good bite with the plier jaws. Pull with the pliers while feeding the felt down the window channel from the top. 8 feet is enough to do one door with extra left over. My 71 '55 has no more window rattles, and I can wash the pig without flooding the interior!! Apparently this is the felt that goes in the door channel, up, over and back down around the window glass. Did you also replace the door felts that run horizontally at the bottom of the glass, both inside and outside? Anyone? What's the number for those? (not being too greedy am I?) The US exchange rate was favorable but shipping was about $100 US and the call (internet would not process order) was $30 US. All told I got a complete set of body rubber, excluding the tail gate/rear window for $550 including all charges. The quality is top notch and the customer service and packaging was great. They originally estimated $55 for shipping and called back to advise of higher price and asked if I still wanted it shipped. I cut the spacers on a table saw until they press-fit i= nto the metal at the sides of the roof. This made the depth of the window s= ide channels equal to the depth of the door window channels. (If you don't= do this, the channels are so deep that the window channel disappears in th= e channel and won't engage the glass properly). The last owner cobbled up = some hideous thing by shimming out the window track with old hunks of fuel = line, etc. I then trimmed the outside window edge with welting, sold to dress up raw m= etal edges. This solution was cheap, looks nice, and solves the nasty rear = window unavailable gasket problem. It's not stock, and not OEM, but it work= s. In wetter climates, this welting will probably rust out or trap water, = so either fill the welting with grease before you install it, or just leave= it off. steve Subject: Re: [FJ55] weatherstrip ideas From: Jason Paul Bennett To: fj55@birfield.com Reply-To: fj55@birfield.com Date: Wed, 4 Dec 2002 19:09:20 -0500 Had an idea and looked up where hot rod builders get there weatherstripping and found this website. http://www.metrommp.com/ They have a downloadable catalog with hundreds of full size (measured) drawings of different profiles. I just bought 2 gaskets > for my rear cargo > windows....fingers crossed... That is going to take a LOT of work. The front windsheild gasket is made of eight pieces, as are the cargo window gaskets... It is not going to be one cut and splice, each length of gasket is vulcanized onto a corner wich is vulcanized onto another length... They use (as did I) the fuzzy side of a Velcro strip (Office Depot- $7.00 per 10' roll) - two rolls needed to do all 8 strips without splicing. Once they are installed, they look almost like OEM! You can use 3M adhesive in addition to the self adhesive backing if you want to know for sure that it won't come off in the rain. This all assumes that you still have the metal backing strips and just need the "fuzzy, anti-rattle" strips. The same shop also had some aftermarket window welting that fits very nicely on both 40's and 55's and only cost $10 per door. They said this window channel is commonly used in restos of older autos and is pretty common in larger glass shops, but unfortunately they could not find the part # for re-order. I'll check back with them in another month or so to see if they have found the #. If I get a part # I'll post it to the list. If you need these and can't locate any locally, let me know if you want me to go pick some up from my source and I'll ship it out at actual cost and shipping. Hope this helps. Didn't find what I was looking for, but found something interesting by the means of a tiny 1969 toyota corona. This was a pocket/economy car toyota made back in the day. This car was in great shape and all of the plastic and rubber was even still good. So why bring this up? Some of the rare pig parts are identical to some of the parts on this car. I grabbed an absolutely mint condition dome light, mint license plate light, grab handles, visors(ended up being too short though) , rear view mirror(in black instead of slate though) and some random door internals. A lot of stuff was close, but no cigar. The door regulators and internals were the same besides the lengths of the push rods. The seat belts were the same, the door weatherstripping would be the same if it was 12 inches taller. Horns, some dash knobs, and headliner/weatherstripping clips also identical. What I got a kick out of was the rear end, it looked like a mini truck rear end, only 1/2 scale, kind of cute almost. Just finding a mint condition license plate light and dome light for a 55 made my day. So if you need some old cosmetic parts, don't overlook any 1960's toyota cars.
