My troopy with the 1hz 4.2 litre diesel is squirting diesel fuel from the injector pump. So I toddled down to my mechanic who advised me to wander off to the diesel injector repair mob. Once there and I show him my problem he says yep I`m getting more and more of this problem showing up every day. Seems from talking to this very helpful chap that the problem stems from the diesel fuel specs being changed about six months ago. The sulphur content has been lowered which in turn has affected the gaskets in my fuel injector pump. This repair shop does about on average 8 of these a day, before the sulphur content was lowered he was doing about 4 a week. He tells me the only guaranteeable way of ensuring the problem does not surface again is to strip the pump and regasket the pump. Can you imagine being half way across the Simpson Desert and developing a major diesel leak. ...Phil... Pretty much the fix is as you describe - the diesel shop took it off and replaced the gasket between the top and bottom bits. Now without actually knowing what one looks like, that's how they described it to me. Hasn't had a problem since. Fairly cheap fix, I remember it cost me $120 all up. Especially as I priced a replacement injection pump - best part of $3k!!!!!! I think it's just plain old wear and tear on a part that cops a high pressure hiding. Annoying yes, possibly life threatening in a situation like you describe being in the desert. But a fact of life - a part needed repairing! Never heard anything contrary to it being the fault of the fuel. Maybe someone in the fuel industry can comment regarding the sulphur bit?? Ruley FROM: "Steve Pickering" SUBJECT: Re: Alert !! Maybe someone in > the fuel industry can comment regarding the sulphur bit?? > > Ruley I happened to mention this post to a friend who is employed by a major oil company. She indicated that they were aware that the low sulphur diesel might make (rubber?) gaskets swell and burst. She thought that it was a problem confined to older engines. If you were to write to the company you normally purchase your fuel from (particularly if it's one of the major companies) then she would expect them to cover the cost of these repairs. Definitely not wear and tear , my motors only done 170k, the repairer is telling me that they are doing gaskets on pumps that are under 100k . Seems that the problem lies across the board with any diesel engine with a rotary pump. They are seeing a lot of later cruisers ,nissans and peugots. When the sulphur content was first lowered overseas in U.S. and Europe they found that they were actually doing their pumps in as a result of the lower lubrication effect of the lowered sulphur content, talk about unintended consequences . Apparently that fault has now been rectified but the gasket problem remains. The talk is that with lower sulphur content in fuel will result in extended life in engines however you can now look forward to a shortened life expectancy in injector pumps. Now we`ve got even more reason to thank the greeneys. ...Phil...
