What are the thoughts from the list, go original (au$379), or after market (cheaper)? My gut feel is go original. As Norm says, mounting is critical. The stock muffler has a reputation as being fairly restrictive. That said, the 1HZ sees only a tad over 1psi back pressure at full song. That's hardly enough to hinder performance so don't expect any performance gain (in other words, don't be tempted to go for a noisy muffler in the belief that you'll gain power). When warming up our truck in c1988, we replaced our factory exhaust with extractors and a larger stainless steel system, incl a straight through muffler, the performance and economy improved noticeably. This was not an expensive brand name, aftermarket system, it was made at the local muffler shop in Toukley, NSW using a suitable 'off the rack' s/s muffler [V8]. It has more than paid for itself and is still in use. The factory exhaust is still hanging in the shed, when others [even the local Police Fj75] saw these results I couldn't give it away. In hindsight I would add a small s/s resonator to the tailpipe but that is only to change the note, the system is quiet enough. This is on an FJ75 and maybe you won't need extractors, but the principle is still the same. Go slightly larger than stock, go stainless steel and get it made by a good tradesman and I believe it will pay for itself. I didn't want to replace a muffler [OEM was still over priced] and have the rest of the exhaust die later [salt-water] so opted for a complete set-up. Just a thought Macca What goes around, comes around! As to what they do, nothing much other than empty your wallet. Others might be of different opinion. Do not confuse gasoline extractors with diesel extractors....it does make a difference on the latter (non-TD only), in the order of 5-10%. Not much, so only worthwile when replacing a rotten factory exhaust, and do a custom SS exhaust at the same time. Done this on a HJ-60/2H, and it's more than just hype....it really revs up easier (just like a larger exhaust on a TD, somehow adding more dynamic oomph (acceleration) than static oomph (constant speed))). -- Bye, Willem-Jan Markerink The desire to understand is sometimes far less intelligent than the inability to understand [note: 'a-one' & 'en-el'!]
