It has a different crank and some major changes to the internals,Pistons, bearings, Cam timing etc. GC Now has this crank (1HD-FTE) in his 80s 1HD-FT engine. It has a crankshaft position sensor lug/protusion on the crank at no 5 journal which in conjuction to the position sensor in the block, it talks the the ECU for crank position. The Fuel pump is electronically controlled. Its up 25 kW and up 50Nm torque on the previous engine. I see it as a great engine like the 1HD-FT engine. The new engine being a lot cleaner and computer controlled in the fuel dept, I like it. (BTW Craig Mort, wheres my book?) As far as the rest of the Truck, It's a Toyota. They havn't had a bad vehicle yet in my opinion. It is available in Japan and whilst there were many changes, the block is basically the same. Head and injection system is different. The intercooler is a strange affair but seems to work well. Power and torque are up there but not in the same league as say an intercooled 1HD-FT. By all reports, they are very responsive and quite clean burning. > normal ones. The longer oil change interval is due to its cleaner burning combustion. It doesn't pollute the oil as quickly. > I had a test drive and the takeoff from the traffic lights is > instantaneous and > very very fast. I was amazed. Driving around in Luxon's V8 100 series was proof to me just how big an improvement in NVH and road manners the IFS 100 has over our 80s. > I also had a new Patrol for the day. The 4.2 Nissan turbo is a slug in comparison. It's where Toyota was back in '89 in diesel technology. > My question - do you know anything about these new engines? > Seemingly tried and true except for all the electronic injection stuff. That shouldn't put you off though. Electronic engine management has been around for years and Toyota have been one of the best companies to embrace this technology in a reliable package. Best of luck in your purchase. Cheers gc '97 HDJ80 - Melbourne Oz
