It 's a 97 model petrol manual. The problem i face is that i spoke to two different Toyota dealers and got two different opinions on the same service with regards to the valve clearance component of the service. Dealer one suggested that unless i had reason to believe the valves/tappets needed doing i.e. noisy then no need to bother. Dealer two said most defiantly to do them regardless of any obvious signs. Not understanding all there is to know re engine servicing i was confused by the two differing opinions. Any suggestions with regards to the do's and don'ts for the 80k service would be appreciated, in particular the valve adjustments. One other quick question, the thermostat, is this worth while replacing (as a matter of course) assuming it is original, not that i have had any problems with it, or leave it be. You see, the 1FZ sees the valve clearance *decrease* with wear. It's the valve seat which recedes allowing the valve stem to move up and close the gap. By the time you hear any valve noise, it's way too late and you'll have caused damage to the valve face and/or valve seat. With many other engines the opposite is true, hence the response from the first dealer. In any case, with the 80 Series being the most common 4WD in Australia, dealers should know this, but surprisingly, many dealer work shops will give one back to the customer at minimum valve lash thinking the clearance will increase with wear. Might be worth while asking for before/after clearance. Might also pay to act dumb and as you check it in, wipe your nose on your sleeve and say "duh, when you duh adjust the valve clearance, duh you set it to the wider one right?" and then wait for the response. Checking them isn't a big deal. If any need adjustment, then it gets fiddly and you need access to a range of lash pads. > thermostat, is this worth while replacing (as a matter of course) > assuming it is original, not that i have had any problems with it, or > They rarely fail, so leave it. Having said that, you'll get half way home and boil the sucker.... At that time its TOO LATE! The dealer who says dont do them unless they are noisy has; 1. no idea about the engine in your car 2. opening themselves to claims for shoddy workmanship 3. Go with dealer two, especially if the clearance has not been checked before. Unlike rocker actuated valves (1FZ-FE has direct acting cams) the valve mechanism, with less moving parts, does not wear. The valve clearances actually close because of valve and valve seat wear. This means they DO NOT indicate adjustment is due by becoming noisy; quite the opposite. > thermostat, is this worth while replacing (as a matter of course) > assuming it is original, not that i have had any problems with it, or > leave it be. Thermostats rarely fail, and if they do, it is not at any specifiable time. They are normally replaced after a major overheat, when cylinder head work is done, or when an engine is rebuilt; purely as a precautionary measure. If you pick the 80 up from service after only a few hours, and the invoice says "valve clearances checked/adjusted", then they have not been done correctly. Usually to have clearances done, means an overnight stay or an early drop off for a late pick up. Cheers * Norm Needham * * Traction4 / ARB Northside * Sydney, Australia * Trac4@bigpond.com
