You would think this to be unlikely, but in view of other things that you would think to be unlikely but aren't, I wonder if this is so? Maybe that fellow had the power switch on and probably that reved it up so it would only change at 130kph. It seems the transmission will not change to 6th until at least 100km/h, if not 120 or 130km/h. Because the transmission uses "AI" (artificial intelligence), it will tailor gear changes depending on what it believes the driver requires. Toyota marketing blurb:- Toyota AI shift control The Toyota artificial intelligence (AI Shift) transmission algorithm is designed to manage the shift regime of both LandCruiser 200 transmissions, taking into account road conditions and driver behaviour. It uses data on throttle valve opening angle, engine revolutions, vehicle speed, vehicle acceleration and the brake-lamp signal to control the basic shift pattern, as well as providing road-condition support control and driver intention support control. The AI Shift control can adjust the shift pattern to suit different drivers and provide engine braking for hill descents. The system works in conjunction with the 2UZ-FE and 1VD-FTV engines' intelligent electronic throttles. The AI Shift system has a 'downshift and hold' mode to provide improved driveability on hill descents. --- Regards, Greg Goulden. 2000 HDJ105 To: 100scool@yahoogroups.com From: Ian Bennett Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2008 09:49:07 +1100 Subject: Re: [100scool] 200 series & overdrive Reply-To: 100scool@yahoogroups.com > > Because the transmission uses "AI" (artificial intelligence), it will > tailor gear changes depending on what it believes the driver requires. > Sounds like the same "Intelligence" that is in my 04 cruise control (i.e there ain't none!!!). It is worse; a German magazine reports that it won't lockup below 100km/h. Which gives the same 'snotty' feeling as I recently experienced in a Kia Sorento (5sp auto)....like driving with a worn out clutch....adding insult to injury. Also, with the J14, in low range, 5-6th gear can't be used. Given the rather low gear ratio (2.62), that sucks. (but not being able to shift manually, and *keep* it in that gear, no matter what (like the later Range Rovers apparently can), sucks even harder) Oh well, perhaps that 5-6th gear lock-out is just a poor attempt to avoid people running with locked center diff on pavement....hopefully it only takes snatching a few wires to get that belittering settled. Btw, given the existence of a 6sp manual for the J12-series years ago, I wonder if they forced any engineer into harikiri for not delivering a 6sp manual for the J14 on time....
